Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended

// Posted in Adobe, Design, Software, Tech

So, I just received an interesting email from Adobe, revealing the first details about the new Photoshop CS3 release. Apparently, they are releasing two versions: Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended.

Adobe describes the new “Extended” Photoshop as such:

“New to the Photoshop family, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended delivers everything in Photoshop CS3 and more. Render and incorporate 3D images into your 2D composites. Stop time with easy editing of motion graphics on video layers. And probe your images with measurement, analysis, and visualization tools.”

All those features sound pretty cool, but I don’t really see myself purchasing the Extended over good ol’ wholesome Photoshop. Apparently Adobe doesn’t see me purchasing it either because they don’t have Web Designers/Graphic Designers included in their demographic information for Extended.

A detailed breakdown of the target audience for each product version can be found here.

My first reaction is that that sounds like a good deal of program bloat to me. I’m sure it will be neat but, I don’t know if I need that much integration of their products. The idea of “measurement, analysis, and visualization tools”, sounds intriguing though…

I thought that “measurement tools” sounded like something that would make it useful as a web tool. I know how irritated I am with slicing in Photoshop, hence the reason we have (had) ImageReady. I’m sure there will be a price difference however, and I know it won’t be justified if the only features I’m personally benefiting from are measurement and analysis tools.
