Everything Will Be Ok

Everything Will Be Ok WallpaperOn my recent trip to savannah I photographed a piece of street art on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Someone has written “Everything Will Be Ok” on a wall on the side of the street. I thought it was interesting enough to photograph and after some photoshop work I’ve turned it into a pretty nice wallpaper. I’m using a 17″ MacBook Pro so it’s at a pretty high resolution. I trust most of you can resize it to your liking.

I wasn’t satisfied with stopping there though. I wanted to know why someone wrote “Everything Will Be Ok” on the wall in the first place. I wasn’t able to find out when it was created or by whom, but I think I may have found out why.

While Googling for “Everything Will Be Ok MLKJ” I came upon this information. One of the first six black women to attend Virginia Tech was Linda Edmonds. When she heard of the death of Martin Luther King and of the flag raising in his honour the following day, she wrote down her thoughts.

The following is an excerpt from her writings.

“Will there soon be nothing left but strips of cloth floating individually about the flag pole? Some bits will no doubt lose strength all together and drift off into the air and never return. No, this will not happen, we will buy a new flag and everything will be O.K.”

I thought that was a fairly interesting discovery so I decided I’d share it with you. I’m not sure if it’s historically accurate as the very reason that was painted on the wall but it’s logical enough for me. If anyone else knows of anything or finds anything else related to the topic, please leave a comment to let me know, I’d love to hear about it.

when you sent me that picture i was just floored because i also wondered where you took it and who wrote it and when and what for lol the reason it moved me and i almost cried is because tom has said that to me whenever things were’nt going so well ever since we met so when i saw that it spoke to me because you sent it right when everything was going wrong at boger’s. it was just too weird and i tried to take it as a positive sign for tom and i lol

the “everything will be ok” was an art movement started by Jason Kofke while he was a student at SCAD. Many people have started spreading the message, I heard its international now. It did not have to do with MLK. It was originally about a breakup.
