The Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Post

Flaming AutographsLast night a group of friends and I went to see the Flaming Lips at the House of Blues, Orlando. I think I can say without question that it was the best show I have ever been to. It was as if they read my mind and then concocted the most tactile, sensory overloaded concert experience imaginable.

I don’t know about you, but when I go to a concert and spot those giant confetti cannons, the first thought in my mind is, “I hope they shoot confetti like, the whole show.” Everyone knows that there’s no such thing as “too much confetti”. Although, I’m sure some of the guys on clean up crew at HoB would beg to differ (but nobody cares what they think).

Yellow and orange confetti was fired off during nearly every song, creating a blizzard-like state of the entire establishment. What’s more, Flaming Lips cohorts tossed out laser pointers by the hundreds before the show began, resulting in an audience-created laser light show… but that’s not all!

I think Rex put it best when he likened the Flaming Lips concert to that of a “new-age” hippy era. Who could forget the beach ball, hippy concert toy of yesteryear? Not the Flaming Lips, of course. They came armed with about 15 giant yellow balloons that bounced around for the near entirety of the show.

Contrary to popular opinion, this was not the best part of the evening. Rex and I, being perseverant as we are, were not satisfied once the concert had ended at midnight, no! We needed to meet the band! After filing to the front of the stage and talking to the drummer, we found out where the band would be exiting and camped out by the gate, awaiting their departure.

At about 2:20am we met Wayne Coyne, what an outstanding guy. He was a great sport and quite understanding of the fact that the small group of us had been waiting over 2 hours to meet him. He signed our flyers, posed for pictures, and chatted with us about his paintings and the absurd motion graphics that played during the concert, (apparently he’s responsible for all of them). What a great end to an already spectacular show.

… and then I went home and broke into my own apartment, the end.

You just said everything I had thought about the evening as well. I just wish I had the wherewithal to stay up and meet Wayne, he seemed like a trip to talk to. Definitely with you on the “new-age” hippy thing. Man, “Best Show Ever” hands down!
